Lok Adalats settle 71.5 L cases in a week

NEW DELHI: An astounding 71.5 lakh cases, or a little less than 25% of total cases pending in courts across the country, were permanently settled during the nationwide Lok Adalat organized last week.

"Out of these 71.5 lakh cases, 20.81 lakh were pre-litigation matter involving bank loans and bills relating to telephone, electricity and water etc, and 5.22 lakh cases related to traffic challans pending in various courts," National Legal Services Authority (Nalsa) said in a press release.

Though the Supreme Court had very little to contribute towards these figures on full and final settlement of cases, Chief Justice P Sathasivam, Nalsa executive chairman Justice G S Singhvi and apex court legal aid services chief Justice A K Patnaik for weeks strategized with the high courts for a coordinated effort to provide permanent solution to the disputes of litigants agreeing to settle their cases.

Nalsa said, "Through Lok Adalat settlements, plea bargaining and special sitting of magistrates, a total of 45.47 lakh cases have been removed from pendency through settlement. There will be no appeal against these settlements."

While nationwide Lok Adalat was held simultaneously on November 23, it was held in Madhya Pradesh on November 30, Odisha on November 24 and in Meghalaya on November 25.
