Ragging death: 4 get 7-year RI

Seven years after a college student was stabbed to death while trying to prevent ragging, a court at Dharamsala has convicted four youths under the IPC and sentenced them to seven-year rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 25,000 each.
Additional and Sessions Judge Rajiv Bhardwaj observed that the evidence proved Vikas Chauhan, Sachin Pal, Saurav Sood and his brother Gaurav Sood guilty of killing Amit Thakur, a BA-I student of Shaheed (Capt) Vikram Batra Degree College, Palampur.
The court, however, transferred the trial of fifth accused Sanjeev Sharma alias Sunny, a minor at the time of the incident, to the juvenile court.
The incident had occurred on August 20, 2003, and the police had registered a case of murder against the accused, who were arrested but later released on bail.
Amit was stabbed as he along with his friends—Munish Walia and Rajesh Sharma—had tried to prevent the raggging of a junior. Later, he succumbed to injuries at Christian Medical College Hospital, Ludhiana, after battling for life for 20 days.
Kuldeep Sen, Additional District Attorney who represented the state government in the case, said since there was no ragging law when the incident had happened and the ordinance issued by the government in 1992 had also lapsed, the accused were charged under the IPC—Section 304 (2) and Section 34, which amounts to culpable homicide not tantamount to murder. “Yet, it's quite satisfying that justice has been done,” he added. Kangra SP Atul Fulzele said, “The police have taken the accused in custody and sent them to the jail.” However, Ravinder Thakur, father of the deceased, said his battle was just half won. “It is only partial justice, and I will continue my legal battle to see that justice is fully done. I have full faith in the judiciary.”
